Services for Children and Young People

Dance Movement Psychotherapy is one of the Arts Psychotherapies. Arts Psychotherapies can help children & young people explore their feelings at a safe distance in a playful way, whilst encouraging creativity, spontaneity and increasing confidence and self-expression. The use of play and non-verbal media in therapy helps to support those who may find verbal forms of therapy alone too distressing or difficult.

I have many years experience of providing Arts Psychotherapy for young people and children in schools, for local councils and in children and adolescent mental health services (C.A.M.H.S.) I am DBS checked and fully insured.

I am trained to work with a wide range of difficulties, disabilities or diagnoses. These include emotional, behavioural or mental health problems, learning or physical disabilities, life-limiting conditions or situations, neurological conditions and physical illnesses. I use a child-centred approach and specialise in using movement and dance in therapy. As well as movement I will use any medium that a child might respond to in order to explore emotional and or behavioural issues. Therapy sessions may explore and support children with :

Bereavement and loss, transition, eating disorders, self-harm, depression, overwhelming feelings, erratic behaviour, a history of abuse, anxiety or fears, life limiting conditions.

How can Creative Arts Psychotherapy benefit children, young people and their families ?
  • Children and young people can begin to connect, learn about and understand their emotions more effectively, reducing their need to try and communicate their needs and/or confusion through difficult behaviour.
  • Processing of difficult material to help individuals fill gaps in development and have an increased capacity to engage with life, relationships and learning.
  • Improved academic and social progress.
  • Increased resilience and self-awareness
  • Improvement in health and well-being in themselves and in those around them
